Gasol

Video conference participants at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, April 12, 2007

The Memphis Grizzlies forward-center spoke to Madrid secondary school students April 12 about his experiences in the United States, his views on basketball in Spain and the U.S. and staying positive when the chips are down. Gasol described the U.S. as a country with a lot to offer, saying his experience has been a good one and that he was easily able to adapt to a new country and culture. One thing Spain could learn from the U.S., he said, was for local schools to successfully mix education and sports. This would allow student basketball players who would not qualify for the major league to continue playing their sport at a competitive level after high school, something common in U.S. colleges, but rare in Spain. When asked if the Memphis Grizzlies’ current standing in the NBA was frustrating to him, Gasol responded that he has felt disappointed at times, but always maintains his desire to play, improve and continue competing. Gasol stated that no matter what team he plays with in the future, it will be one with the will to win.

The Pau Gasol videoconference was part of the new Basketball and Education program, a joint effort by the U.S. Embassy in Madrid and Spain’s Asociación de Baloncesto Colegial (ABC). The program, which runs through November, includes high school tournaments, basketball clinics and visits from leading U.S. basketball personalities.

Virginia Tech’s Solar House is a model of a bioclimatic house aimed at energy saving through the use of alternative, non-contaminating energy sources. Built by professors and students of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies of Virginia Tech University, it was submitted for competition at Solar Decathlon 2005, organized by the U.S. Department of Energy. The prototype is now installed at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond.

Bob Schubert, Associate Dean of the College of Architecture and Project Coordinator, together with Bob Dunay, Joe Wheeler, and David Clark, responsible for its execution, opened the DVC with a summary of the project, its energy viability, and the architectural features of the structure. Spanish invitees had the opportunity to make comments on the energy viability, architectural aspects, environmental sustainability, and possible commercialization of this kind of house.

The Spanish audience was made of representatives of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, the Institute of Solar Energy, CIEMAT (Center for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research), the Complutense University of Madrid, and the Pontifical University of Salamanca in Madrid. Among them, what a happy coincidence, were three of the people responsible for the solar house prototype Magic Box, submitted by the Polytechnic University of Madrid at the international competition Solar Decathlon 2005, which took place in Washington, D.C.

FEBRUARY 2007

arrow Presentation of  "Basketball and Education 2007" program, an initiative of the US Embassy in Madrid to support education and sport, February 26, 2007 (video )

Embajador Aguirre

Ambassador Aguirre along with Miguel Angel Martín and Alberto López Ribé at the opening of the program "Basketball and Education 2007", February 26, 2007

Last February 26, US Ambassador to Spain Eduardo Aguirre presented the “Basketball & Education Program” 2007. In the presence of the Director General for Sport Promotion of the Regional Government of Madrid Miguel Angel Martín, and the President of the School Basketball Association Alberto López Ribé, US Ambassador explained that the goal of this project is to foster values related to education and sport among the youth, especially basketball, which, he said, “is the quintessence of US sport.” “A basketball team is like a little world where all the players fight for the same goal, and like a small family where all the problems are discussed and faced. The values of discipline, work, and sacrifice prevail, and their practice facilitates the integration of groups.”

Integration through sport was also one of the values highlighted by Director General for Sport Promotion Miguel Angel Martín, who stated that with “programs like ‘Basketball & Education’ we will be able to experience many values such as coexistence and integration, which are typical of US society.”

“Basketball & Education” will take place through 2007 through a number of initiatives aimed at secondary school students. The first link in this chain will be the School Cup, a tournament that will take place in March, and in which students of Madrid schools with a long basketball tradition will participate.

Therefore, the President of the School Basketball Association Alberto López highlighted “the importance of sport during school age as a basic complement to the education of the individual, which contributes to promote the principles of a healthy and free society.”

But the School Cup will not be the only project of “Basketball & Education.” Through the year, a number of “clinics” by professional players will take place in the public schools of Madrid with the highest percentage of immigrant population, as well as visits to Spain by US stars like Bill Bradley and Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

The presentation at US Ambassador’s residence was attended by approximately one hundred people of the academic world, representatives of the students who will participate in the School Cup, and players like Iker Iturbe and Gonzalo Martínez, of Estudiantes, Wayne Brabender, and Jose Manuel Beirán.
