INSTITUTO DE ESTUDIOS NORTEAMERICANOS

The Instituto de Estudios Norteamericanos (IEN) is an independent, non-profit, private institute that promotes English language learning and the study of the United States in Catalonia. The IEN sponsors public programs, including speakers, exhibits, and concerts. The IEN circulating English-language library has over 8,600 volumes and 110 periodicals, 430 video cassettes and 10 CD-ROM's, and offers electronic data base search services. The IEN also offers an educational counseling service to students seeking educational opportunities in the U.S. In its 45 years of operation, the IEN has established an outstanding reputation in the Barcelona community for excellence in English teaching. Approximately 50 American teachers instruct a student body of nearly 3,600 per trimester at the principal center, the branch center in Badalona (Barcelona suburb), and in other sites around Barcelona. While the IEN is an independent institution, Public Affairs enjoys excellent relations with it and frequently sponsors conferences, exhibits, book presentations and special programs there.
