FULBRIGHT PROGRAM

The Commission for Cultural, Educational and Scientific Exchange between the United States and Spain administers the prestigious Fulbright grants sponsored by the U.S. Congress since 1946 when Senator J. William Fulbright introduced legislation that created the program.

The Spanish binational Commission was established by an agreement between the two governments in 1958. It is one of the better financed and largest in the world. In 2008 it had a budget of $10,858,000, and grants awarded totalling 100 for U.S. citizens and 167 for Spaniards. Although a significant part of the funding comes from the government of the United States , the majority of the program’s financing comes from Spanish sources, principally the Spanish government and some regional governments.

The Commission, celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in 2008, is co-chaired by the Public Affairs Officer of the U.S. Embassy and by the Director General, Cultural and Scientific Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Commission also provides information on study opportunities in the United States for English and for undergraduate, graduate and professional university study.
