Ambassador Solomont Presents on U.S. Volunteerism at Annual Congreso Estatal de Voluntariado
On December 1, 2011, Ambassador Solomont delivered a lecture entitled “Volunteerism and Community Service in the United States” at the fourteenth annual Congreso Estatal de Voluntariado, held this year in A Coruña. The Ambassador discussed the history of volunteerism in the United States and the citizen involvement and government leadership that has created a culture of service in our country. He highlighted specific examples of organizations that have been especially successful, such as City Year and the Hands On Network, government programs such as the Corporation for National and Community Service, and models of corporate involvement in volunteerism, such as Timberland and Alcoa. The Ambassador also discussed Spain’s promotion of volunteer activities and the Embassy’s strategy for supporting citizen action in Spain.
