PASSPORT SERVICES

The U.S. Consulate General in Barcelona provides services to U.S. Citizens needing a new passport, a renewal of a current passport, pages added to an existing passport, names changes in a passport, or a replacement of a lost or stolen passport. Routine (non-emergency) passport services will require an appointment.

Except in emergencies, U.S. passports are produced at facilities in the United States. Emergency passports are produced onsite at the Consulate and can be processed generally within a few hours. Emergency passport services do not require an appointment. However, emergency passports will only be processed for citizens that must travel within 10 business days and can present evidence of this need to travel (plane or train tickets, etc).

Passport processing time and the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative

With the implementation earlier this year of the first phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, more U.S. citizens than ever before need to apply for a passport. Due to the heavy demand for U.S. passports please allow for 10 days for processing.

U.S. Document Style Photos

Passport, Non Immigrant and Immigrant Visa Services, all U.S. document services require photographs of this format.

There is a photo booth on the Consulate premises that produces photos meeting all the requirements. The cost to utilize this photo booth is three Euros, and the booth accepts only coins. In the event that the photo booth is not functioning, further down this page you will find a list of photo places that can make photos of this format.

U.S. passport photo requirements are different from Spanish passport photo requirements and must conform to the following guidelines:

  • Image: Photograph must be recent (within six months), with a clear full face and front view image, ensuring the ears of the customer are showing, in color.

  • Size: The photograph must be at least two inches by two inches (51 mm by 51 mm) in size, exclusive of any white borders. The image size, from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head (including hair), should measure between one inch and one and three-eighth's inches. There should be at least one-half inch between the top of the head and photograph's border.

  • Background: There must be a clear contrast between the background and the customer's image. The background of the photographs must be white. Photographs that are grainy in appearance cannot be accepted.
