undergraduate and 100 graduate students during the two summer sessions. About 25
percent of the students come from Spain, 40 percent from the U.S. (all 50 states),
and the rest from 65 other countries.
Originally conceived as a program for study abroad students,
SLU Madrid is now the only full-service U.S. university in Spain. In addition to
offering spaces to visiting students from all over the world, each year the
campus admits about 200 first-year students who begin their undergraduate
careers with the university in Madrid. Students majoring in Spanish or
International Business can do their entire four-year degree program in Madrid.
Students studying in the dual-degree International Nursing Program spend the
first, second and fourth years in Madrid, while the third year is spent at the
School of Nursing on the home campus in Missouri. All other degree majors
transfer after two or three years to either the home campus or elsewhere to
finish their degrees.
In addition to offering undergraduate career options for
students who begin their programs in Madrid, the campus offers master’s degrees
in English language and literature and in Spanish language and literature. The
master’s of English is a dual-degree program offered year round with the
Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and requires one six-week summer session on the
home campus. The master’s of Spanish, offered on both a year-round and summer-only
basis, may be completed in its entirety on the Madrid campus.
All students can choose to take academic courses in English
or Spanish. Spanish and international students normally enroll in the university’s
intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) program during their first year of
study. The university operates a housing program that includes residence halls,
apartments and host families, with options for full room and board, half room
and board and kitchen privileges.
